village houses, that this Government may be ask to sell in

the vicinity of Long Harbour and Jones Cove.

I am also prepared if the Admiral-

-ty desire to prevent the establishment in the neighbour-

-hood of Long Harbour of Public Houses or other objection-

-able adjuncts of civilization to give an assurance that

the Colonial Government will not license any places of

Public Entertainment in that neighbourhood without first

obtaining the concurrence of the Naval Authorities.

With these assurances, with the

possession for so long as they may require it for the pur-

-pose of a Rifle Range of the Peninsula between Long Har-

-bour and Jones Cove and with those waters reserved for the

use of His Majesty's Ships I think the Admiralty should be

satisfied.

If they are not I can only suggest

that they purchase at its present value any land they think

they may require in the future, or that they obtain the

limited use of the Crown Land within the area above refer-

-red to under the conditions set forth in the 2nd. para-

-graph of Colonel Lewis' Memorandum on the Land Question at

Hongkong between the War Office and the Colonial Goverment.
